“About URC” is recommended for all who want to learn more about Christianity and URC—it is required for those seeking to join the church. Church membership identifies us with a particular body of believers, with whom we commit to live the Christian life.
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. - Hebrews 13:17
Becoming a member at URC is a three step process:
Attend "About URC".
The class meets for 10 Sundays, and is offered each Spring and Fall. The class reviews basic Biblical teachings on what it means to be a Christian, the nature of revelation, sin and salvation, the sacraments, worship, and faithful communion with God. Theological distinctives such as the Reformed faith and Presbyterian church polity will also be covered. Anyone is welcome to join the class, including those who have taken the course but would like a refresher. The About URC class is a prerequisite to becoming a member of University Reformed Church. A separate children’s profession of faith class is offered in the Spring for young people. Contact Dave Hinkley for information on the next youth class.
Meet with the elders. After completing the About URC class, individuals may choose to apply to become a member. The Session (elders of URC) will meet with candidates to hear how you became a Christian, ask a few questions, administer the membership vows, and respond to any questions you may have. The meeting takes about 30 minutes. Please contact Pastor Nate Groelsema with any questions.
Be publicly received before the congregation. New members will be introduced to the congregation at a morning worship service. New members will briefly introduce themselves and publicly make membership vows.
